What’s In Your Food - Dole 100% Juice - Do You Know What… Is?

I’m obsessed with knowing what’s in my food. I admit it. I am a label analyzer. You can find me in the grocery store; the annoying guy analyzing the labels of all products I consider purchasing. Sometimes I get burned, but for the most part I’m pretty good.

Yesterday I picked up a 2 quart carton of Dole’s Strawberry Kiwi 100% Juice. The label, 100% Juice sounded promising. I picked it up, put it in the cart, and kept it moving. I figured, there’s no high-fructose corn syrup in it, so I’m good.

Well my friends, I was wrong. I poured myself a glass last night, and made a protein shake this morning with the juice. I come home today only to see my roommate (aka, the garbage can) diluting his juice with water. I looked at him curiously like, “You’re not fat. What do you care how much sugar it has”. He replied stating his preference was just a little bit less sweet juice; which I can respect. He later retorted with a smirk on his face, “I bet you don’t know what cochineal extract is”. I nodded showing my lack of knowing what it was. He point it out on the juice carton. I almost dropped my glass. I notice unknown ingredient included in this 100% juice. He mentioned that I should be careful since I am allergic to seafood, as his understanding was that cochineal extract was from Conch shells.

Time to break out Google. Well, my friends, some of you may find this disturbing. Cochineal extract is derived from this bug below. It’s a fucking parasite. Yummy! Fear factor anyone.

the surg3on’s definition of 100% juice - You take a fruit, you squeeze the fuck out of it until you get some juice. You do not add anything to it. This is 100% juice.

Corporation’s definition of 100% juice - You take a fruit, you squeeze the fuck out of it until you get some juice. You put it in a container, you add some “filtered water”, ascorbic acid, some vitamins, some cochineal extract, and some citric acid, and you have 100% juice. It’s magical ain’t it?

THIS IS BULLSHIT. WE WANT REAL FOOD!!!

Female (left) and male (right) Cochineals.

There are two principal forms of cochineal dye: cochineal extract is a colouring made from the raw dried and pulverised bodies of insects, and carmine is a more purified colouring made from the cochineal. To prepare carmine, the powdered insect bodies are boiled in ammonia or a sodium carbonate solution, the insoluble matter is removed by filtering, and alum is added to the clear salt solution of carminic acid to precipitate the red aluminium salt. Purity of colour is ensured by the absence of iron. Stannous chloride, citric acid, borax, or gelatin may be added to regulate the formation of the precipitate. For shades of purple, lime is added to the alum. - [Via: Wikipedia]
